When a young up-and-coming Lee Iaccoca first championed the Ford Mustang design, could anyone have imagined it would become such an iconic car? There are still quite a few on the road, which is a testament to the simplicity and style given to it by designers. The general public embraced the car for its price point, but enthusiasts recognized its performance potential through its lighter weight and horsepower capabilities, and thus, the pony car was born.
Because there are still so many on the road, one of the best aspects of the first-generation Mustangs is the ability to modify the car to one’s liking without devaluing the vehicle. The high-quality restoration of this 1965 Mustang Convertible makes it stand out from the crowd, signaling to onlookers that this is no plain-Jane Mustang. It would be hard to find another in this fantastic condition.
The recently sprayed bright metallic Silver borrowed from a Nissan 350Z wears a protective layer of clearcoat, and we found no rock chips anywhere. The brightwork is nearly perfect, including the bumpers and stainless trim, either being replaced, re-chromed, or polished. The GT350-inspired grille and steel-reinforced fiberglass hood and scoop provide a clue that what lurks below is not stock. A new set of 17-inch Scott Drake replica GT500 wheels provide an extra layer of GT panache.
The silver paint contrasts nicely with the brand-new black vinyl top, matching boot, and interior, helping this car reach a sophistication level not often associated with early Mustangs. The entire interior is virtually brand-new with more comfortable bucket seats outfitted from a ’68 model. Everything here is either black, white, or chrome. The door panels, carpet, windshield, and even the mirror are all recent. The black padded dash features contrasting white gauge faces, which really make a statement. The driver grips a black leather-wrapped polished-aluminum steering wheel while shifting through all five gears of the T-5 manual transmission using a white shift knob.
The engine bay is subtle, yet nicely presented with minimal wiring showing. Like the interior, everything here is black, chrome, white, or aluminum. A 289ci C-code V8 with upgraded 302 heads resides between the frame rails. A chrome air cleaner hides the electric-choke Holley four-barrel carburetor, which handles the fueling duties through the Edelbrock aluminum intake. The Cobra aluminum valve covers sit on top of the black-painted heads and block, while Jet-Hot ceramic-coated headers and stainless exhaust finish the look. Front-disc brakes provide extra stopping power for the newly found horses.
